OSTEOPATHY

FOOTSCRAY

  • The body is a unit, and the person represents a combination of body, mind and spirit.

  • The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.

  • Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  • Rational treatment is based on an understanding of these principles.

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of musculoskeletal therapy that looks at the relationship between the structure of the body and how that can influence its function. Osteopathy helps provide a window of opportunity for the body to heal and therefore function more efficiently. We do this via manual treatment techniques to the relevant muscles and joints with hands-on techniques like soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation, stretching, and dry needling. We also utilise movement based interventions and provide ongoing patient education to help our clients meet their goals.

Australian Osteopaths are registered primary healthcare practitioners who have completed a minimum 4-year full-time tertiary degree. All Osteopaths are required to complete 25 hours of continued professional development (CPD) every year to maintain high standards of practice.

Many Osteopaths go on to complete further education in rehabilitation, Pilates, ergonomics, women’s health and paediatrics.

Please read our practitioner biographies for further qualifications.

What should I expect during treatment?

We will chat about why you are here to see us as the first phase of your consultation, including asking you questions about your medical history. This information determines what areas need to be addressed. Once we have gathered the information, we conduct an assessment where we see you in action. This may involve range of motion, orthopaedic and strength testing.

From our assessment, we will then advise on the best course of action! This is where our style of treatment is a little different to the traditional ‘lie on the table and relax’ approach. We utilise
hands-on techniques to iron out any restrictions, which may include soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, or dry needling.

We then follow up with movement-based interventions (where indicated) either on the spot or as your homework. This way of treatment helps you build a better foundation for function and progression.

The number of sessions required will depend on the extent of your condition, as well as other lifestyle contributing factors. Every case is individual, so we will give you our best estimate for the treatment time frame.
